CSA Week Update, July 22, 2026: Akawa Butte Fire and Community Support

This week’s CSA looked very different as the Akawa Butte Fire, along with numerous other fires across Central Oregon, led to evacuations for thousands of families. Many weren’t able to pick up their vegetables, and routines shifted quickly as smoke, stress, and safety became the priority.

One thing I deeply appreciate is our farm is holding everyone’s CSA shares so families can pick them up when they return to town. That kind of kindness matters and is one of the reasons I value this community so much.

What We Ate This Week

Even with the disruption, we kept meals simple and relied on what we had:

Watermelon (easy, hydrating, kid‑friendly)
Fresh peaches
Chicken + rice
Beans and broccoli rabe
Lentil Salad

If you’re navigating smoke or limited groceries, here are a few easy pantry‑friendly ideas:

Quick pasta with canned tomatoes
Frozen veggies and rice bowls
Simple salads with whatever’s on hand
Egg scramble

Helping Kids Feel Grounded This Week

With smoke, schedule changes, and general uncertainty, kids often need small tasks to help them feel steady. Small tasks give kids a purpose and help keep the day moving.

A few simple ways they can help and stay occupied:

Fill water bottles and help pack go bags
Help prep simple meals
Make thank you posters for firefighters
Cuddle up as a family and read aloud
Build with blocks or play with their favorite toy
Do quiet crafts (coloring, painting, finger knitting, bracelet making, and simple origami)

Community and Gratitude

Even in a hard week, the strength of Central Oregon shows up everywhere: neighbors checking on each other, farms adapting, and firefighters working around the clock. I’m grateful for this community and for everyone showing up in big and small ways.
